What is WELL?
The WELL Health Building Standard is a certification system that combinesgreen building practices with physical and mental health benchmarks, serving as an evaluation framework for designers, architects, and property operators. Its goal is to ensure the health, well-being, and productivity of building occupants.
The Latest WELL v2 Certification Standard
The International WELL Building Institute (IWBI) has officially launched the newest version of its certification standard—WELL v2. This update introduces a range of enhancements to products and services, ensuring compliance with social welfare standards.
First introduced in 2014, the WELL Health Building Standard is the world’s first building standard centered on human health and happiness. Through WELL, IWBI translates research into actionable tools, aiming to reshape buildings and organizational structures in ways that promote well-being and sustainable growth.
WELL v2 builds on the latest scientific research and industry best practices, forming the foundation of the global WELL healthy building ecosystem.
Rick Fedrizzi, Chairman and CEO of IWBI, emphasizes that WELL v2 is designed as an intuitive, flexible rating system—one that is scalable, globally applicable, and adaptable across markets, organizations, and property types. It prioritizes technical rigor and user-centric solutions.
How Does It Work?
WELL v2 operates on a 100-point scoring system, structured around 10 core concepts that most significantly impact human health in built environments:
To achieve certification, projects must earn at least 2 points in each concept. The total score across all categories determines the certification level (Silver, Gold, or Platinum).
